Opponents of Airsoft Pistol Hand Guns
Even though airsoft pistols are very popular and continue to increase in popularity, not everyone is in favor of allowing these types of guns to remain available to the general population. There are people who strongly oppose airsoft handguns and are lobbying to have them outlawed. There is a minor political movement seeking to have airsoft handguns banned.
It is not unusual for there to be critics of replica guns such as the airsoft handguns. Replica guns have been targeted by gun critics for many years. There are always vocal critics who would like to see their ideology become mandated through legislation. As recently as the 1990s, there was an unsuccessful attempt to actually have the sale of toy guns banned in several states. Therefore, it is not surprising that airsoft pistol handguns have become the subject of much criticism and opposition.
Some people and groups who oppose the sale and use airsoft handguns argue that these types of guns should be illegal because there is a chance that they will be used for the purposes of committing crimes. While crimes committed with guns are not uncommon, the legality or illegality of airsoft handguns has no impact on such crimes. There are actually federal regulations in place that make it easy to distinguish airsoft pistols from other types of handguns. By federal law, airsoft pistols must have an orange muzzle, which serves to make it easy to distinguish airsoft pistols from other types of handguns.
Other individuals and groups in opposition to airsoft pistols argue that the existence of these types of guns actually contributes to and reinforces violent behavior in people. They argue that playing with realistic looking guns that are actually toys downplays the effects of violence associated with real weapons, and therefore encourage violent actions. However, there is no solid evidence that indicates that airsoft pistols have any impact on a person’s likelihood to commit violent crimes or engage in other violent behaviors. Such a theory is not a sound basis for legislative change.
The anti-airsoft movement does not currently seem to pose a real threat to the continued legal availability of airsoft handguns. It is not likely that airsoft pistols will be banned any time in the foreseeable future.
